1. Editors' Error on AAS Prize Statistics
From: AASWOMEN editors
Last week, we attempted to add up some numbers for the female and
male awardees of AAS prizes, with numbers supplied by Vera Rubin.
We accidentally confused Vera's Female/Male awardee numbers with
Female/Total awardee numbers, and thus cited some incorrect numbers
and percentages. Correct sums for the last 3 decades are as follows:
1975-1984: 3 Female, 40 Male; 3/43 Female = 7.0%
1985-1994: 7 Female, 47 Male: 7/54 Female = 13.0%
1995-2004: 3 Female, 61 Male: 3/64 Female = 4.7%
These percentages are even lower than those we quoted last
week, although the number of female awardees is so low that
accidentally setting the number of male awardees equal to
the total number of awardees gave results that were not too
far off!
We apologize for our error in last week's AASWOMEN.

[The comment below is in response to Vera Rubin's submission to the
August 6 AASWOMEN, regarding the number of women receiving (or not)
AAS prizes and a call for more nominations. -- eds.]
Hi Vera,
Well said! I saw your note to the AAS Women mailing. Having been on
more than one AAS prize committee I think I can say that not many
women are being nominated for prizes. More nominations would
definitely help the process, and strong letters of support are
essential.
