Meeting Location
Cavalier HotelThe Oceanfront and 42nd Street
Virginia Beach, VA 23451 USA
On 27 April - 1 May 2009, in the resort town of Virginia Beach, located on the Atlantic shore close to Norfolk, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) will hold a symposium, "Relativity in Fundamental Astronomy. Dynamics, Reference Frames and Data Analysis". The Symposium will bring together experts in relativistic celestial mechanics, relativity tests, astrometry, geodesy, and kindred fields. It will feature talks (with no parallel sessions) and posters (displayed throughout the entire meeting). View downloadable meeting poster sample (18 MB) (smaller version (.5 MB).
The Symposium will be followed by the 40th Annual DDA Meeting to be held at the same location on 2 - 5 May 2009.
The two conferences - the IAU Symposium and the DDA Meeting - held back-to-back at the same location, will together constitute a major astronomical event, and will bring together a broad audience of scientists from various fields of astronomy.
Deadlines
- 1 December 2008, 4:59 UTC - Submission of IAU Travel Grant application with abstract.
- 30 January 2009, 4:59 UTC - Early registration (at reduced rate) for meeting.

Abstracts
To give a presentation at the IAU Symposium, you must submit an abstract (300 word limit) through the AAS/OASIS abstract form. Only one contributed presentation per speaker will be accepted. Every effort will be made to accommodate requests for oral presentations, but if time constraints will not allow this, some contributed talks will be converted into poster papers.
Meeting Registration
Meeting advance registration fee (NOT including the banquet) is $320, by the registration deadline. Attendees can register late or at the meeting, in which case the registration fee (NOT including the banquet) will be $395.
The conference banquet will be held on Thursday, 30 April 2009. The ticket price is $55.
The meeting registration form is not available yet.
Hotel Registration at Discounted Rate
The Cavalier Hotel room rate for the DDA Meeting and the IAU Symposium is $105 + 13% tax + $1 per room/night fee, which makes about $120.

IAU-Sponsored Travel Grants
A limited number of IAU grants are available to cover in part expenses associated with attendance of participants at the Symposium. The IAU wishes to support qualified scientists to whom only limited means of support are available (e.g., colleagues from economically less privileged countries and young scientists.) An IAU Grant should be seed money to ensure the participation of a selected beneficiary, rather than adding comfort for colleagues whose attendance is already assured. Participants may apply for an IAU grant, using the form available on http://www.iau.org/static/meetings/GrantSymposiumRIM.pdf
Applications should be submitted via e-mail to one of the Co-Chairs of the Scientific Organizing Committee.
