The AAS High Energy Astrophysics Division (HEAD) assists and promotes the advancement of research and the dissemination of knowledge about high energy events, particles, quanta, relativistic gravitational fields, and related phenomena in the astrophysical universe. HEAD also promotes the coordination of this research and knowledge with other branches of science. The division holds Division Meetings each 12-24 months, as well as sessions within the meetings of the American Astronomical Society. Each year, HEAD awards the Rossi Prize for recent original research in High Energy Astrophysics. Approximately every 18 months, HEAD also sponsors the Schramm Award for High Energy Astrophysics Science Journalism which is awarded at the HEAD Division Meetings. Items of Current Interest:

  • The deadline for the next Schramm Award is October 1, 2009
  • Three new members were elected to the HEAD Executive Committee. Julia Lee, Scott Ransom and Paul Ray were elected to two-year terms (2009-2011) as members of the HEAD Executive Committee. Congratulations to all three! And thanks to retiring members Vicky Kalogera, Cole Miller, and Ron Remillard.
  • At the HEAD Business meeting during the January 2009 AAS meeting in Long Beach, the Chair, Mitch Begelman, announced that the 2009 Bruno Rossi Prize is being awarded to Charles Bailyn, Jeff McClintock and Ron Remillard for their measurement of the masses of Galactic black holes. Congratulations to our new Rossi prize winners, who will deliver their prize lecture at the January 2010 AAS meeting in Washington DC.
  • The Eleventh HEAD meeting will be held on the Big Island of Hawaii March 1-4, 2010. We are now soliciting ideas from HEAD members for invited speakers (contact any HEAD Executive Committee member below) and special sessions (deadline for special sessions is October 1, 2009, email headsec@xraydeep.org).
