Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary: The Director of the Center for Space Science and Exploration is responsible for the civilian space work at the Laboratory. The Director will also serve as Program Manager for NASA and other civilian space activities and manage the CSSE line organization. The CSSE Director is part of the ALD/TR Program Managers Group and reports to the Division Director for Nonproliferation and International Security. The CSSE Director will be responsible for growing the space science and exploration portfolio Laboratory-wide, through effective communication and interaction with various sponsors (currently including NASA, NSF, NOAA) and Laboratory staff. The CSSE Director is the spokesperson for the Laboratory's space science effort. He/she will identify and assess opportunities and carry forward the vision for space science and exploration at Los Alamos. Nearly all NASA funding at the Lab supports basic research in science and technology; the portfolio includes basic research and analysis in the space sciences, space science instrumentation, and the development of enabling technologies. The portfolio currently is approaching $15 million. The CSSE Director will lead and encourage participation of Laboratory organizations in civilian space activities, participate in formulating strategy for institutional investments, and coordinate with other Laboratory space-based programs. The successful candidate is encouraged to actively perform research in a space-related science in order to maintain their personal technical expertise. He/she will be the Lab's principal point of contact to NASA and the NASA program centers. Required Skills: * Strategy and vision, as demonstrated by a record of creating new technical initiatives, integrating previously disparate efforts, impacting the planning of national and agency programs, and strategic planning. * Entrepreneurship, and successful interaction with peer-reviewed scientific agencies, as demonstrated by winning proposals, service on peer panels, success in developing initiatives within the peer community, and customer satisfaction as shown by achievement awards or other feedback. Experience with NASA is strongly preferred. * Leadership, as demonstrated by leading large (multi-million dollar) scientific and technical teams to success, and by a record of successful teamwork and consensus building in working across organizational boundaries. * Management, as demonstrated by executing successful programs that include innovation and risk-taking, and by experience in managing budgets at the line, program, or project level. * Technical accomplishment as demonstrated by publication record, awards, and other evidence in a field related to space science and exploration, and broad experience with the science and technology that will be represented by CSSE. * Interpersonal and communication skills, as evidenced by successful external and internal interactions, and by briefings, presentations, and writings. * A strong record of demonstrating the following leadership characteristics: personal integrity and accountability, commitment to teamwork, commitment to quality and excellence, commitment to diversity and excellence in the workforce, excellent conflict resolution skills, trustworthiness in relationships, broad institutional motivation and focus, and people development. * Q clearance or the ability to obtain one.
