Attention: K. Kuijken, Prof. Dr. (Coordinator, Galaxies ResearchNetwork)
POSTDOCTORAL NOVA FELLOWSHIP AT GRONINGEN, LEIDEN OR UTRECHT IN GALACTIC STRUCTURE AND EVOLUTION.
The Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA), as part of its research programme `The Formation and Evolution of Galaxies, from High Redshift to the Present', plans to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow in extragalactic astronomy, starting around mid-2001. The fellowship will be tenable for three years, subject to a review during the second year. It is to be held at one of the three NOVA university astronomy departments taking part in the programme: Groningen, Leiden or Utrecht. Applicants from all nationalities are welcome.
Particular fields of interest for the programme are (i) high-redshift galaxies (ii) nuclei of galaxies (iii) dynamics of galaxies and galaxy clusters (iv) stellar populations and star formation in galaxies and (v) gravitational lensing. However, strong candidates in any relevant field will be considered.
The NOVA fellowships are prestigious postdoctoral positions. NOVA fellows have freedom to pursue their own research within the programme and will be provided with generous funding for travel and computers. Candidates should have a proven record of excellence in extragalactic research.
Astronomers in the Netherlands have access to a wide range of facilities, including ESO, Westerbork, ING, HST, EVN, JCMT, Chandra, XMM, as well as comprehensive networks of workstations at the different institutes. In 1998 Dutch astronomy was selected as one of six `Top Research Schools' by the Dutch government, resulting in significant new funding. This is being used to invest in a vigorous new astronomical instrumentation programme, in staff positions, and to fund postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
Interested candidates should seek a sponsor at one of the participating institutes, and write a short (3-page) description of their proposed research programme. Together with CV, publication list and a description of past and present research, this should be sent to the address above. Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address by the closing date for applications.
Further information, including descriptions of the research taking place at the participating institutes, may be found at the NOVA WWW site, http://www.strw.leidenuniv.nl/nova, or may be obtained by contacting the coordinator for the Galactic Research network, Prof. Konrad Kuijken, at the address above.
Applications will be accepted until 8 January 2001.
