Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position involving analysis of Guaranteed Time Observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Chandra is providing sub-arc second resolution imaging-spectroscopy over the range 0.1 - 10 keV. The successful applicant will join a group investigating X-ray emission from both compact and spatially extended structures in active galactic nuclei (AGN), including radio jets in radio galaxies and the narrow line regions of Seyfert galaxies. Objects observed in the first year of Chandra include M87, NGC 1068, Cyg A and NGC 4151. Related studies at other wavelengths may be involved. Candidates would ideally have expertise in some of the following areas: theory and modelling of the X-ray continuum and line spectra from hot thermal gases, both photo- and collisionally-ionized; observational X-ray astronomy; active galactic nuclei; and CCD image processing.

The University of Maryland is close to many major institutes in the Baltimore-Washington area with astronomical departments or programs, including the Space Telescope Science Institute, Johns Hopkins University, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Naval Research Laboratory, and the U.S. Naval Observatory. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory and University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA, are about 2 hours drive away. Excellent possibilities exist for interaction with the many astronomers working in extragalactic astronomy, especially the X-ray astronomy group at the nearby Goddard Space Flight Center.

This research associateship will be for one year initially and may be renewed annually for two more years. Applicants must have a Ph. D. degree in astronomy or physics and should mail a curriculum vitae, a description of how their research will enhance the above-described Chandra program, and should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent. Applications received before 31 January 2001 will be assured of full consideration. EOE/AAE.
