Attention: Dr. Christopher Martin, Professor/Principal Investigator

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar appointment in Observational Astrophysics to work as Research Scientist for GALEX, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. GALEX is a NASA Small Explorer Mission to be launched in January, 2002. Appointment is contingent on completion of Ph.D. The appointment is for one year, starting in Fall 2001, and is renewable up to three years.

The GALEX instrument is a 50-cm telescope operating in the far and near-ultraviolet (135-300 nm) with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. A principal scientific goal of GALEX is to map the history and probe the causes of star formation out to redshift z=2, during the time that most stars, elements, and galaxy disks were formed.

Applicants should propose research programs that incorporate GALEX data into their scientific investigations. Appointees will also be expected to contribute to the analysis of GALEX science data and development of science analysis tools. While specific research projects using GALEX data are encouraged, opportunities for independent research are available through the use of all of Caltech's astronomical facilities, including those at Palomar Observatory and the W.M. Keck Observatory.

Applications including a brief statement of research interests, relevant work experience, curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference should reach Caltech before 31 January 2001. Women, minorities, veterans and disabled persons are encouraged to apply. AAE/EOE.
