Attention: Dr. Tom Vestrand

The Space and Remote Sensing Sciences Group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral fellowship appointment to work on the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE). The primary goal of the ROTSE project is the observation of prompt optical emission from gamma-ray bursts and other astrophysical transients. However, the ROTSE-1 telescope has also collected a rich database containing nearly 3 terabytes of sky monitoring images that can be mined for the study of a broad range of astrophysical phenomena. In collaboration with the University of Michigan and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, LANL is currently developing ROTSE-3 telescopes that will be deployed at a number of locations throughout the world. The successful candidate will participate in all facets of the ROTSE program including instrumentation and software development, observing, and analysis of the observations.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in astronomy or experimental astrophysics that was completed within the last 3 years. Experience with astronomical instrumentation and software development is desirable. The ideal candidate would also have experience with large datasets and optical observing as well as a solid publication record. The position is a two-year appointment, which is renewable for a third year. The starting salary is $54.1K annually and is supplemented by a generous, comprehensive, benefits package. Interested applicants should submit a statement of their research interests, a curriculum vita, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Tom Vestrand at the above address. Applications received before 15 March 2001 will be assured of full consideration. The position is available immediately. AA/EO Employer.

Individuals with disabilities needing reasonable accommodation should call (505) 667-8622. A Teletype Device for the Deaf (TDD) is available by calling (505) 665-5357. Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the US Department of Energy. AAE/EOE.
