The computer system at the NOT is Linux based, with some Solaris and Windows, on more than 20 computers split between the sea level office and the mountaintop observatory. This network provides services for staff, astronomers and engineers; some nodes are systems control and data acquisition platforms.
The SMSS will provide overall computer system administration, including maintenance, upgrade and emergency support, write software, and give occasional technical support at the telescope (after training). We ask in-depth knowledge of networked Linux, some familiarity with Solaris and Windows, and knowledge of current programming languages. Familiarity with HTML and web servers is desirable. Good command of English and a current drivers' license are required.
The initial appointment is for three years with possibility of renewal and requires residence on La Palma. The remuneration package will be about 45,000 Euros per year, depending on qualifications and family status. Health insurance and reasonable relocation costs are also paid.
