Job Description

The NAOJ Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is a research center for advanced technology development and has been supporting various astronomical instrument programs. As "Subaru 2",  the next decade of 8.2m Subaru Telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii, starts from 2022, NAOJ has plans to strengthen the NAOJ’s adaptive optics (AO) activities at the ATC in collaboration with Subaru Telescope and TMT, to contribute to future ground based and/or space based development projects (e.g. Wide-field AO), and to enhance the optical and infrared development capabilities of NAOJ.

We invite applications for an associate professor position at the ATC to lead the activities for adaptive optics. A successful candidate for this position is expected to: 1) develop a core group for adaptive optics at the ATC; 2) participate in the Subaru GLAO (Ground Layer Adaptive Optics) Project; 3) plan the next generation AO; and 4) promote research activities that make impact on relevant science fields as well.
Another important responsibility of this position is to carry a role of “a point of contact” with the science community not only for astronomy but also for surrounding fields, such as engineering of optics, mechanics, control, and electronics. Fostering of young scientists, engineers and technicians including PhD’s students is also required as part of the responsibility.
