Job Description

About the Role

The Astronomy Unit at Queen Mary University of London seeks to appoint a lecturer with research expertise in one or more of the areas of exoplanets, planet formation and star formation. This is a teaching and research position, with time split between lecturing, project supervision and research

About You

The research expertise of the successful candidate would ideally align with and extend the research of the planet formation/exoplanets group. We are equally interested in observational or theoretical expertise.

Broad areas that the group works on include planet formation, planet-disc interaction, circumbinary discs and planets, the star formation/planet formation connection (particularly external photoevaporation) young exoplanet systems and their host stars. We are involved in theoretical research utilising high performance computing facilities, as well as observational projects using facilities including JWST, ALMA, TESS, NGTS, HST and the VLT.

The successful candidate should have a strong track record in research and a clear plan for research in the future.

Lecturing and supervision experience will strengthen an application but are not essential.

About the School/Department

The Astronomy Unit is part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences based at Mile End Campus in London.

We have substantial on-site dedicated computing facilities for data reduction and developing numerical models.

We are also engaged with other groups in the London area, undertaking regular exoplanet/planet formation meetings with Imperial, UCL and MSSL.

In addition, the Astronomy Unit has a strong group in solar/plasma physics, including involvement in the Parker Solar Probe, as well as a strong group in cosmology and gravitational waves, with involvement in Euclid and LISA.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time (35 hours per week), permanent appointment, with an expected start date of late 2023/ early 2024. The starting salary will be Grade 5 through 6, in the range of £47,178 - £58,595 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
