Faculty Position in the formation and evolution of galaxies and super-massive black holes
Job Summary
Job Description
Leiden Observatory at Leiden University invites applications for a position at assistant professor level to strengthen research in the area of the formation and evolution of galaxies, and their co-evolution with supermassive black holes. We particularly encourage applicants with an interest in gravitational wave astrophysics, taking advantage of the Netherlands involvement in the ESA LISA mission, and/or in the exploitation and modelling of data from current and future multi-messenger facilities. We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in astrophysics or a related field who are equally committed to a career in research, mentorship, and teaching.
Leiden Observatory is a diverse department, carrying out observational and theoretical research in the fields of cosmology, formation and evolution of galaxies, galactic structure, compact objects, gravitational waves, molecular astrophysics, star- and planet formation, exoplanets, and astronomical instrumentation. Staff members have access to a wide variety of telescopes on the ground and in space, as well as excellent computing facilities. The Observatoryoffers a complete undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc, PhD) teaching program that focuses on integrating students into research as soon as possible. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in the education and supervision of students.
The positions are open to candidates from all countries. Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity within its community, and we we particularly welcome candidates from groups that are historically underrepresented in astronomy and/or have demonstrated leadership in advancing equity and inclusion.
