Job Description

The Physics Department at Eastern Illinois University seeks qualified candidates for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level starting fall semester 2023, subject to available funding.  We seek an enthusiastic undergraduate teacher who will complement our Astronomy program.  The qualified candidate must hold, at minimum, a PhD (or be ABD with PhD completion required for tenure) in Astronomy, Physics or a closely related field by the time of appointment, and show evidence of excellent teaching skills, with expressed willingness to involve undergraduate students in physics or astronomy related research.  The successful candidate will promote undergraduate student learning through mentoring, provide upper and lower-level teaching, help to deliver the Astronomy curriculum, become Director of the Observatory, and provide Gen Ed offerings. We seek a motivated faculty member to assist in the growth of the department and facilitate community outreach and research through development and maintenance of the EIU Observatory, which houses a 16” Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and an 8” solar telescope.  Eastern Illinois University is a comprehensive state university in a community of 20,000 in east central Illinois. Enrollment at the university is 8,000. EIU is dedicated to quality teaching in small class settings. The Physics Department currently consists of 7 full-time faculty and 60 physics majors in all its options. Undergraduate programs include options in Physics, Astronomy, Computational Physics, Engineering Physics, Pre-Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Teacher Licensure in Physics.
