The Department of Physics at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Chile, invites applications for two faculty positions in Valparaíso, beginning as early as possible in 2022 but at the latest in March 2023. The applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy or Astrophysics, with proven research productivity and commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level.
Candidates with expertise in any field of Astrophysics are welcome to apply. Potential synergies with current UTFSM professors in astrophysics, including Matthias Schreiber (stellar evolution, exo-planets), Antonio D. Montero-Dorta (galaxy evolution, halo-galaxy connection, cosmology) and Rory Smith (numerical simulations of galaxy formation and evolution, environmental effects on the galaxy population), would be appreciated, but candidates with expertise in other fields of Astrophysics will be fully considered. Importantly, additional funding for a one-year postdoc will be provided for both positions.
The successful candidates are expected to have a commitment to excellence in research and to join the recently opened undergraduate program in Astrophysics, interacting closely with students. Our Department is an active research center in the country with a visitor program and an international research collaboration network. Our University is mainly focused on Science and Engineering with multidisciplinary activities, attracting some of the most brilliant students in these fields. The successful candidates will have access to the Chilean ten percent of observing time at the telescopes located in our country which includes ALMA and the VLT and in the near future the ELT and GMT. In addition, our University hosts powerful computer clusters. The selected candidates are expected to teach in Spanish within a year.
