Job Description

Today's world requires critical thinkers. People who can define new directions for research and teaching that respond to the challenges and developments in astrophysics. As an assistant professor, you will play a leading role within observational programs inside the Event Horizon Telescope and in the development of the upcoming African mm-wave telescope in Namibia.

You will collaborate closely with the Radboud Radio Lab and Professor Falcke's group, and you will also be involved in the daily supervision of Bachelor's students, Master's students and PhD candidates. As an assistant professor you will teach general physics and astrophysics courses to physics students at both BSc and MSc level.

 

Profile

You hold a PhD in Astrophysics and are a proven independent researcher in the area mentioned above, in which you will be able to conduct your own well-defined research programme.

You have experience with and knowledge of observations using mm-wave telescopes and VLBI arrays; the astrophysics of black holes; VLBI data calibration; imaging and advanced analysis of EHT VLBI data; scientific software development; large-scale computing and efficient algorithms for the reduction and analysis of big observational data volumes; and current and future EHT operational developments.

You have international standing as demonstrated by a track record of publications in top-level journals, invitations to conferences, prizes, grants, and other scientific distinctions.

You possess a demonstrable passion for teaching, excellent teaching skills, and a track record commensurate with the career stage.

You should be able to teach a broad range of courses in astronomy and physics.

You are expected to teach in Dutch (Dutch language level B2), during a three-year transition period. Teaching in English is possible.

You are willing to contribute to management tasks within the department.

You have the ambition to create societal impact and like to work in a team.

The Department of Astrophysics at Radboud University is part of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP). This vibrant and international department currently consists of 15 faculty , 15 postdoctoral researchers and engineers, 30 PhD candidates, and 10 MSc students. Research focuses on high-energy astro-particle physics, cosmic rays, black holes, gravitational waves, stellar and binary evolution, star clusters and the Milky Way.

It concerns an employment for 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.

At the start of your employment you will be appointed as Assistant Professor level 2 (minimum €3,974 / maximum €5,439 salary scale 11) on a career track towards promotion to Assistant Professor level 1 (minimum €4,814 / €6,181 salary scale, 12). This is based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience. The performance criteria and duration of the career track will be tailored to your background and track record. 

You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. This is based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience.

You will be employed on the basis of a temporary contract for 18 months with the prospect of a permanent contract in case of a positive evaluation of your performance.
