AAS President J. Craig Wheeler has sent a letter to NASA Administrator Mike Griffin thanking him for appointing Alan Stern as the new Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate.

Dear Mike:
I am writing on behalf of the American Astronomical Society to congratulate you for your excellent choice of Alan Stern as the new Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate.
Alan will bring a fresh new vision and leadership to SMD.
He has, of course, deep expertise in planetary science, but also a passion for the broad sweep of contemporary astrophysics where NASA plays so critical a role, both for the scientific community and for the public. Alan also has excellent management skills that will be highly useful in this challenging new position.
We look forward to great NASA science and a positive working relationship with Alan and his colleagues at SMD.
