July 20, 2004 -The House VA-HUD-IA Appropriations Subcommittee has released their report for the FY2005 budget. A press release highlighting the content of the report is avaialable here. Both NSF and NASA would receive cuts of about 2% each overall. Under NASA, JIMO would see reductions, new initiatives would be stalled and the subcommittee will await the CAIB report to modify budgets in the HSF side of the house. NSF MREFC would be the only line item to increase. A link to the full report will be made available once it is known. The status of the bills can be checked through this link.
May 19, 2004 -The Congress has actually begun to meet in conference to discuss the Budget Resolution, considered the first step in the passage of appropriations bills. The regularly updated status of the so-called CBR can be found here.
February 3, 2004 - The NSF budget would grow slightly while the Astronomical Science Division would receive the largest percentage increas (4%) of any division within the Math and Physical Sciences Directorate. ALMA and IceCube both receive continued construction support under the Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction budget line, while other areas of the NSF budget that support astronomy, such as the Geoscience directorate (atmospheric sciences division) and the Office of Polar Programs also see some growth, although the impact on astronomy is not clear yet.
February 3, 2004 - The NASA OSS budget would grow rougly 10% between FY 2004 and FY 2005 under the President's proposed budget. Increasing enterprises include Solar System Exploration (transfers of Prometheus and lunar exploration missions make this line appear to shrink, but it actually would see growth), and Mars Exploration, with a new enterprise, Lunar Exploration, beginning under the President's plan. High Energy Astrophysics as embodied in the Structure and Evolution of the Universe enterprise would see a decline, with delays to Con-X and LISA as well as reductions in other missions in this enterprise. The Astronomical Search for Origins would grow while the Sun-Earth Connection enterprise would shrink slightly, though some of this shrinkage could be due to programmatic transfers.
