December 12, 2005 -The Congress is in session at least through Friday December 16 to pass the FY2006 appropriations bills. Although NASA and NSF have received their proposed budgets from both the Senate and House, in the final negotiations on the Dept. of Defense and NIH budgets an additional cut, as high as 2%, is expected to be applied to the appropriations levels as passed by the two houses of Congress. Excellent summaries of the NASA and NSF budgets have been prepared by the staff of the R&D Funding Program, a part of the AAAS Science and Public Policy Program. Both agencies receive some level of increase compared to FY2005, but the NASA increases go in the large part to development of a Crew Exploration Vehicle and restoration of mid-year funding cuts to science R&D, while the NSF increase is only marginal.
