Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee Annual Report Released

Kevin B. Marvel, Deputy Executive Officer

Summary

The Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee (AAAC) has released their annual report for the period March 2004 to March 2005. This important committee helps advise policy makers on federal investment and activities in astronomy.

Details

The AAAC is a federal advisory committee chartered under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which resulted from one of the primary recommendations of the Presidential Committee on the Organization and Management of Research in
Astronomy and Astrophysics (COMRAA). COMRAA was originally called for in the President's budget blueprint for Fiscal Year 2002, which appeared in February 2001.

Since that time, it has held regular meetings and released reports and letters, which it directs to policy makers who make decisions regarding astronomy research funding and policy.

The most recent report and transmittal letter is now available on the AAAC web page, which is hosted by the AAS. A number of important recommendations are made including the servicing of the HST without damaging ongoing priority missions, continued multi-agency support for missions like GLAST and strong support for the Beyond Einstein program, GSMT and ATST, among others. AAS members are encouraged to read the report and reference it in communications they make with policy makers.
