This was posted (by a third party) to the Graduate
Women in Science discussion list. I thought people would be
interested in how to contact Mattel with comments about
their Barbie and Hot Wheels kids' computers.

Here's the breakdown of numbers of titles per
classifications created by Mattel:
Barbie computer "fun" software - 12
Barbie computer "education" software - 6
Barbie computer "game" software - 1
Barbie computer "internet" software - 1
Hot Wheels computer "fun" software - 4
Hot Wheels computer "education" software - 11
Hot Wheels computer "game" software - 4
Hot Wheels computer "internet" software - 1
...
What are Barbie computer users missing? Specifically math

to include in my commentary, the woman I spoke with eagerly
passed on this man's name She told me to "keep up with
this, girl." I think she has concerns too!)

4. Jobs
From: "Nadine G. Barlow" ngb
physics.ucf.edu
Astronomers are encouraged to apply for the following
position. The University of Central Florida has recently
initiated an undergraduate astronomy program, which allows
undergraduate physics majors to pursue an astronomy track.
The UCF Robinson Observatory, located on campus, is home to
a 0.66-m (26") Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. There is
considerable interest in expanding the astronomy research
program. Any questions about the UCF Astronomy program can
be directed to Dr. Nadine Barlow (ngb
physics.ucf.edu).

Faculty Positions in PHYSICS
The Physics Department of the University of Central Florida
invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor
position in either theoretical or experimental physics.
Advanced appointments can be considered for distinguished
candidates. The Department is seeking faculty to interact
with and strengthen its programs in condensed matter, device
physics, surface science, atomic and molecular physics,
biophysics, solar system geophysics, and undergraduate
education. UCF is a large metropolitan university engaged
in a strategic initiative to greatly increase research and
graduate studies. Collaborative projects are encouraged
with major on-campus research centers, in areas such as
materials science, optics, forensics, information
technology, drug discovery, and solar energy. A PhD in
Physics or a closely related discipline is required. Submit
a CV, publication list, proposed research program, proposed
syllabus for a graduate and/or advanced undergraduate course
in an area related to your speciality, and a list of three
references to: Prof. B. P. Tonner, Chair, Department of
Physics, Univ. of Central Florida, Orlando, FL 32816-2385.
Consideration of candidates will begin December 1, 1999 and
continue until the position is filled. UCF is an Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. As an agency of
the State of Florida, all search materials are available for
review on request.

HARVARD-SMITHSONIAN CENTER FOR ASTROPHYSICS
The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory
(AST/RO) project is seeking an experimentalist to operate
the first permanent submillimeter-wave telescope at the
U.S. National Science Foundation Amundsen-Scott South Pole
Station. Beginning in mid-2000, the incumbent will
participate in data reduction and analysis and in
preparation for the winterover year while stationed at the
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge,
MA. Late in 2000, she or he will spend 1-3 months at the
South Pole during Austral summer to operate the instrument,
assist with system upgrades, and conduct research. After
another 9-month period in Cambridge, the incumbent will
spend the year 2002 as the AST/RO scientist in residence at
South Pole (as part of a crew of ~45), bearing sole
responsibility for winterover operations of this state-of-
the-art submm-wave telescope. The position will be
renewable for a year following the winterover year, with
residence in Cambridge.
AST/RO is currently outfitted with heterodyne receivers at
230, 460-492, and 810 GHz; two new array receivers at high
frequencies will be installed in late 2000, providing
significantly expanded capabilities. AST/RO is the first
submillimeter telescope to exploit the uniquely transparent
sky over the Antarctic plateau in winter and is open to the
astronomical community on a proposal basis. This position
provides a unique opportunity for both personal and
collaborative research projects which can be conducted
nowhere else. More information about the AST/RO project can
be found at our Web site at http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/~adair/AST_RO.
A Ph.D. or equivalent technical experience is required. A
good general understanding of astronomical instrumentation
and familiarity with computer operations and software,
cryogenics, and electronics are desirable. Ability to work
independently is critical. AST/RO is operated under the
aegis of CARA, the Center for Astrophysical Research in
Antarctica. Applications, including a statement of research
interests and relevant experience, curriculum vitae, and
three letters of reference, should be sent to: Dr. Adair P.
Lane, SAO, 60 Garden Street, MS-78, Cambridge, MA 02138,
before March 1, 2000. Women and minorities are encouraged
to apply.
