AAS Committee on the Status of Women
Weekly issue of 09/14/01, eds. Meg Urry & Patricia Knezek
This week's issues:
1. Note from the Editors
2. Job: Assistant Professor of Astronomy, Franklin and Marshall College
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. From the editors:
The shocking, horrifying events of last Tuesday -- four airplane
hijackings leading to deadly attacks on New York and Washington --
have consumed and preoccupied all of us. Because it is not a moment
that many can focus on the issue of women in astronomy, the present
issue of AASWOMEN includes only the one time-critical submission
(a job ad). The regular discussion forum will resume next week.
Our hearts go out to those who lost family or friends.
Meg Urry & Pat Knezek

2. Assistant Professor of Astronomy, Franklin and Marshall College
Applications are invited for a tenure-track (asst. prof.) position
in astronomy starting in fall 2002 in the Department of Physics
& Astronomy, Franklin & Marshall College.
Candidates must demonstrate substantial commitment to undergraduate
teaching, with prior experience designing and teaching undergraduate
astronomy and astrophysics courses preferred. A vigorous research
program is also required which can involve undergraduate students in
publishable resarch projects using F&M's facilities. These include
access to the NURO (Flagstaff) 0.8-m telescope with CCD, the campus
0.4 meter telescope with PMT and CCD, the Phoenix-10 robot telescope
in S. Arizona, two workstations running IRAF, and six 8-inch
Celestron telescopes with CCDs and indoor PC control. See
http://www.fandm.edu/Departments/Astronomy/Astronomy.html for
further details about our program.
F&M is a selective private liberal arts college with 1,850 students
located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a small city of 50,000 about
1-1/2 hours from Baltimore and Philadelphia. A Ph.D. in astronomy
or astrophysics is required. A complete application package must
include a statement of teaching philosophy and research interests,
a description of possible undergraduate research projects, curriculum
vitae, and copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts. Letters
of recommendation (at least three) should be sent directly to the
address below. Applications must be received on or by October 1, 2001.
Franklin & Marshall is committed to cultural pluralism through
the hiring of women and minorities and encourages all interested
individuals to apply. EOE/AA.
