2. Book recommendation for those interested in the discussion based on Sylvia
Hewlett's book

Re: the discussion on Sylvia Hewlett's book:
List readers might be interested in a book that came out last year called
for the Wall Street Journal, so she comes to the topic without an apparent
axe to grind. The book discusses how corporate culture is placing
ever-growing demands on white-collar professionals, asking for more of their
time while cutting wages and benefits. I'm disappointed that Time et al
didn't make a front cover out of *that* book, which has issues that affect
far more people than Hewlett's book.

4. Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award deadline

July 1, 2002 is the deadline to nominate a woman physicist for the
APS' Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award. This award recognizes and
enhances outstanding achievement by a woman physicist in the
early years of her career. At the March meeting of the APS, several
past winners (including the most recent winner, Deborah Jin) spoke
informally about how important winning this award had been to
them. The award offers a travel grant to give lectures in their field
of physics at four institutions and at a meeting of the APS, plus a

6. Position available - Director of International Square Kilometre Array
project

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a visionary international project to
develop a next-generation world radio telescope with a collecting area of one
million square metres. The SKA is designed to probe the universe at radio
frequencies from the current epoch back to the epoch of reionization and the
formation of the earliest galaxies. An International SKA Consortium
representing twenty four institutes in eleven countries are partners in a
cooperative research and development program toward construction of the SKA.
The Square Kilometre Array Consortium is seeking an individual for the
position of Director of the International SKA Project. The Director will
- lead the SKA management team in the development of SKA design concepts;
- lead activities to establish an international SKA project office as a legal
entity;
- coordinate institutions involved in SKA development to achieve a structured
and efficient global effort;
- lead generation, approval, and implementation of plan for concept
development;
- develop the scientific goals and requirements of the project in
collaboration with the SKA Science Advisory Committee;
- oversee development of possible concepts for SKA architecture that meet
scientific, engineering, political, and cost constraints in collaboration
with the SKA Engineering and Management Team;
- oversee comparison of scientific, technological, and cost and benefits of
alternative concepts, leading to a single design concept;
- and develop a detailed implementation and cost plan for the chosen SKA
design concept.

The appointment is funded by the International Square Kilometre Array
Steering Committee (ISSC) for at least two years, and the successful
applicant will be expected to take up the position at one of the Consortium
institutes. Options in which the Director takes up the appointment away
from his/her home institute are encouraged. The Director will report to the
ISSC, which has ultimate responsibility for SKA development. We are seeking
an individual with a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, physics or
engineering, or equivalent experience, a strong record of achievement and
leadership in radio astronomy or radio astronomy instrumentation, and
excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

7. Two astronomer positions at the U.S. Naval Observatory

The Nautical Almanac Office (NAO) at the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO),
Washington, DC has an immediate opening for two astronomers. Both are civil
service positions, and require US citizenship. The NAO is a Division within
the Astronomical Applications (AA) Department at USNO. The NAO produces
several publications for the U.S. Navy, including The Astronomical Almanac
and The Nautical Almanac. Address questions specific to these positions to

One position requires a Bachelors Degree in astronomy, physics, a related
field, or equivalent experience as well as expertise in a high level
computer language such as Fortran, and web language such as HTML. This
person will participate in the production of the almanacs. The software
language used to produce the almanac data is Fortran. This position is a
career appointment in the U.S. civil service. The position will be filled
at the GS7, 9, or 11 level (salary range: $31,397-$46,469) depending upon
the qualifications of the successful applicant. This position is announced

The second position is for a post-doctoral scientist with a specialty in
dynamical or positional astronomy. The position is a temporary Federal
appointment at the GS 12 level. The position is for one year, renewable for
up to three years. This person will work under the direction of Dr.
Sethanne Howard. The successful candidate is expected to conduct
astronomical research or scientific study consistent with the status of the
Department as a national resource in fundamental astronomical reference data
and collaborate with members of the staff. Areas of special interest are
the fundamental astronomy relating to solar system dynamics, reference
frames, precession, and nutation models as they relate to the underlying
science in The Astronomical Almanac. The Department has a network of PCs

Radiation Instrumentation Collaborative Access Team (SRI-
CAT)Director. The successful candidate will guide, coordinate and
initiate state-of-the-art x-ray research at the Experimental Facilities
