2. Grants for Gender Equity in Science

NSF Program Solicitation NSF 03-502 "Gender Diversity in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (GDSE)". This program
seeks to broaden participation of girls and young women in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics. The grants awarded would
support research, demonstration, and dissemination projects that lead
to changes in the education system. Letter of Intent is due December 20, 2002.
The Gender Diversity in STEM program has been funding this scope since 1993,
under the prior names "Program for Women and Girls" (PWG) and "Program for
Gender Equity in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology" (PGE).

3. APS Mass Media Fellowships for Summer 2003

APS supports a ten-week summer fellowship to allow physics
students to work full time as reporters, researchers or production
assistants in a mass media organization. Priority will be given to
graduate students in physics or closely related fields. The deadline

4. Postdoctoral Positions in Theoretical Astophysics, Northwestern University

A minimum of two and possibly more postdoctoral positions in theoretical
astrophysics will be available in the Department of Physics and Astronomy
at Northwestern University with possible starting dates as early as
January 2003. The Theoretical Astrophysics Group at Northwestern currently
includes Profs. V. Kalogera, F. Rasio and R. Taam, four postdoctoral fellows
(K. Belczynski, J. Faber, P. Grandclement, and N. Ivanova) and five
graduate students. We are particularly interested in candidates with
interests and prior experience in the following research areas: compact
object physics, gravitational wave sources and data analysis, numerical
relativity and relativistic hydrodynamics, binary stellar evolution, X-ray
and nuclear astrophysics, dense star cluster dynamics, and extra-solar
planetary systems. Initial appointments will be for 2 years with likely
renewal for a third year. Applications from women and minority candidates
are especially encouraged.
Applicants should send their CV, list of publications, a brief
statement of research interests (up to 4 pages), and arrange for a
minimum of 3 recommendation letters to be received by December

5. Postdoctoral/Research Fellowships at the Australian National University

The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) at the Australian
National University has a number of (fixed term) openings for full time
research in the following areas:
* A Postdoctoral or Research Fellow to work on topics of mutual interest
(theoretical, observational or interpretive) in the exploding field of
extrasolar planets with Professor Penny Sackett, Director of RSAA. RSAA
has recently undertaken a cross-disciplinary effort in planetary sciences
to combine expertise in solar system and extrasolar planets.
* A Postdoctoral or Research Fellow to investigate galaxy formation and
evolution by tracing the extent, evolution and environmental dependency of
the structural properties of galaxies versus redshift and across a range of
environments, with Dr Simon Driver.
* A Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct research on highly-evolved low and
intermediate mass stars, with Dr Peter Wood. Fields of interest include
observational and theoretical studies of AGB and post-AGB star mass loss,
nucleosynthesis, evolution and pulsation.
* A Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Fellow to work on theoretical or
observational aspects of the first stars and the chemical enrichment of the
University, with Dr Martin Asplund, Professor Mike Bessell and Professor
John Norris.
RSAA operates the Mount Stromlo & Siding Spring Obervatories and has an
astronomical instrumentation program currently providing instrumentation
for the Gemini telescopes. RSAA staff have access to Australia's radio and
optical astronomical facilities/partnerships (including the Australia
National Telescope Facility, the Anglo-Australian Telescope and Gemini) and
ANU supercomputing facilites.
Salary Range: Postdoctoral Fellow - $AUD47,721 - $AUD51,066
Research Fellow - $AUD53,640 - $AUD63,287

6. Faculty positions at St. Cloud State University

The Department of Physics, Astronomy and Engineering Science at St. Cloud
State University invites applications for two or more tenure-track
positions. Initial appointment is expected to be at the Assistant Professor
level, although candidates with exceptional qualifications may be considered
for higher rank. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience. A Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy or a related field is required.
Preference will be given to candidates with research and/or teaching
experience beyond the Ph.D. The successful candidates will be expected to
teach undergraduate courses in the department at the introductory, advanced
and general education levels. The appointees will also be expected to
conduct research involving undergraduate students and to seek external funding

7. Faculty post in Dept. of Physics at Smith College

The Smith College Physics Department invites applications for a tenure-track
appointment in physics at the Assistant Professor level, starting September
2003. The candidate should have a Ph.D., a commitment to undergraduate
teaching, and a strong research program accessible to undergraduate
involvement. Preference will be given to those with postdoctoral experience.
Start-up funds are available to aid in establishing a research program.
