letters on the topic of "Gender Disparity in Physics: A Multifaceted
Challenge." These letters (and a response to the letters) are related
to the article "What Works for Women in Undergraduate Physics,"
published in the September 2003 Physics Today.

2. Event for Young Professional Women in Science & Engineering (DC area)

The [following] email was distributed to program officers here at the NSF.
Dear PI: I am writing to ask you to encourage any women students or
postdocs who are working with you or your colleagues to attend an event
sponsored by NSF and the Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) organization.
It will take place on Friday, April 2 in Room 1235 at NSF. The event is a
professional development opportunity for young women in science and
engineering at the threshold of their careers from the Washington DC
metropolitan area universities and colleges. Refreshments will be
provided. They will get an opportunity to meet several role models and
participate in panel discussions on finding a good mentor and networking.
Please encourage women students in science and engineering to come.

3. Workshop--Survival Skills for Successful Women Physicists

[Even for those who don't attend, the brief talk summaries in
the on-line program may be of interest. -- Eds.]
There are still openings in the workshop on Survival Skills for
Successful Women Physicists to be held 1:30-5:45 pm on Sunday,
March 21 prior to the APS annual meeting in Montreal, Canada.
The workshop will feature a panel of successful women physicists,
plus an interactive session with a professional trainer. It is aimed at
early- to mid-career women physicists, however both men and
women are welcome to participate. Details and registration at

Cost is $40 US. Pre-registration is strongly recommended to ensure a
space; however, you need not be registered for the APS meeting to
attend this event. A reception will follow from 6:00-7:30 pm,
co-sponsored by CSWP, the Committee on Minorities, and the Committee
on Careers and Professional Development.

4. Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Cluster Fellowships

Radcliffe welcomes proposals from small groups of scholars (2 to
5) who have research interests or projects in common and wish to
spend a year as fellows together pursuing those aims. The Institute
encourages the inclusion of junior faculty and all members of the
cluster must have been awarded their doctorates by December
2003. To gain consideration, the convener(s) of such a group
should submit a letter of intent (one to three pages) describing the
group's focus, aims, and membership, a list of participants and their
curriculum vitae as well as completed application forms (online by
April 9, 2004) to Fellowship Program director, Judith Vichniac,
postmarked by May 1, 2004 for the fellowship year 2005-06.
