1. Reminder: Draft Pasadena Recommendations Posted

A reminder that the draft of "The Pasadena Recommendations to Promote Equity
in Astronomy" is now available to AAS members for review and comment. We
have already gotten some very useful comments and suggestions, and we look
forward to hearing more. In order to view the document, one has to login to

The CSWA will accept comments and suggestions on the current draft until
September 17, 2004. The committee will then review and incorporate the
community input with the goal of presenting the revised draft to the AAS
Council in January 2005.

2. More on the GAO report on Title IX and Women in Science

Debra Rolison. -- Eds.]
As noted in the previous issue of AASWOMEN (July 23, 2004) the Government
Accountability Office has released (on 19 July 2004) the congressionally
requested report on Title IX compliance in science. The report is entitled
"Gender Issues: Women's Participation in the Sciences Has Increased, but
Agencies Need to Do More to Ensure Compliance with Title IX".

Accompanying last week's release of the GAO report was a press conference
held the morning of 22 July.
Speaking at the press conference were Marcia Greenberger (Co-Director of
the National Women's Law Center, Washington, DC), Nancy Hopkins (Professor
of Molecular Biology, MIT), and Donna Nelson (Professor of Chemistry,
University of Oklahoma).
Those readers of AASWOMEN who attended the "Women in Astronomy II: Ten
Years After" conference in Pasadena in June 2003 may recall Donna Nelson's
excellent presentation on gender and minority statistics in the sciences.
She is hosting on her website links to transcripts of the news release and
the statements read at the press conference, and links to relevant data
(the MIT Study, the Nelson Diversity Surveys).

3. Assistant Professorship, University of Michigan Physics Department

The Physics Department at the University of Michigan anticipates that a
tenure track faculty position will be available with a September 2005
starting date. The position is the Norman M. Leff Assistant Professorship.
We are considering applications in all areas of physics represented in the
department: High Energy Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Atomic Molecular
and Optical Physics (AMO), Astrophysics, Biophysics, and Theoretical
Physics. We are particularly interested in applicants working in the areas
of Theoretical Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Theory, String Theory, AMO
Theory or High Energy Theory.

doctoral degree in physics. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent research

5. Legislative Assistant Position (Science), Capitol Hill

Congressman Ehlers is seeking candidates for a Legislative Assistant to
handle Science Committee issues in his personal office. The person would
be responsible for advising the Congressman and developing policy on all
scientific issues that are before Congress. In addition, the person would
be responsible for staying abreast of developments in the different fields
of science and briefing the Congressman on new issues or discoveries
relevant to federal policy, working with the various scientific
organizations on policy and scientific issues, and representing the
Congressman's views to the scientific community. The qualifications for
the position include: A PhD is required; background in science policy;
strong writing, communication, and networking skills; ability to keep
abreast of research in different fields of science; knowledge of
PowerPoint; and experience in the federal legislative process. Please
