I can only say that I found it very depressing that an International
Conference on Women in Physics boasted a total of 143 participants.
By contrast the American Physical Society March 2005 meeting had over
500 Session Chairs!

2. Career Breaks (cont.)

Hello All,
Given the IOP link posted in the last WIPHYS (2/10/06) I thought I'd take
this opportunity to bring up the subject of career breaks in the U.S.
(again). For those unfamiliar with IOP, it's basically the U.K.'s version
of the APS. I'd like to point out that this pamphlet and link they have
posted is an updated version of a booklet that IOP has had for years - I
have a copy. Personally, I think those of us in the U.S. should be
embarrassed that we do not have such information available for our own
colleagues. A Google search of "career breaks physics" turns up a number
of IOP sites and articles but nothing in the U.S. This has been the status
for years now. I know; I created my own website because of it. (Google
doesn't seem to pick out my site and articles unless my name is included in
the search. I don't know how to remedy that.)
Many of us know people (often women) who have haphazardly dealt with a
career break or left physics because of their inability to navigate a
break. I really think something should be done about this and I believe the
first step is creating a place for people to get information about career
breaks and a network for information sharing. If anyone else is interested
in this please, email me.

3. Update - CSWP/DPF Networking Luncheon (April)

CSWP and the Division of Particles and Fields will co-sponsor a buffet
luncheon from 12:00-1:30 pm on Monday, April 24, 2006 at the APS meeting at
the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Dallas. The luncheon is open to all, both men and
women. Enjoy a full buffet lunch and network with colleagues! Natalie Roe
(LBNL), Marcela Carena (Fermilab) and Ann Heinson (Univ of California
Riverside) will speak informally, followed by an opportunity for questions.
Cost: $20. Students are $5, thanks to the generosity of DPF. Please
pre-register at http://www.aps.org/educ/cswp/index.cfm - only limited
walk-ins can be accepted.

4. CSWP/COM Reception, April 24

The APS Committee on Minorities in Physics (COM) and the Committee on the
Status of Women in Physics (CSWP) will co-sponsor a reception on Monday,
April 24 at the APS Meeting in Dallas. The reception will be held from
5:30-7:00 pm in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. This is a wonderful opportunity to
learn about the work of these Committees, to network with colleagues, and
to unwind after a long day of sessions. All are welcome to attend.
