1. AASWOMEN - Spread the word!

For those of us at colleges and universities, the fall semester has begun,
and new students, faculty, and staff have arrived. Many other institutions
also experience an influx of new employees around this time of year. The
CSWA would like to encourage you to spread the word about the AASWOMEN weekly
electronic newsletter to new students and/or staff. Signing up is easy and
FREE (see the directions below, and at the end of every edition of the
newsletter). It's a great way to find out about issues of interest to ALL
scientists, with an emphasis on those that impact women. Submissions are
welcome, as are suggestions for topics to explore. Please alert your
colleagues to this opportunity!

of Women in Science and Engineering," which was released September 18, 2006

3. Contributions to STATUS are welcome!

Previous issues will give you ideas of the type of articles we publish -
biographies of women astronomers, articles on women in science (not just
astronomy), opinion pieces, policy issues, advice to young scientists,
book reviews, "snippets", artwork and, last but not least, Notes from a
Life - a short piece describing an incident (preferably with some lesson
learnt) in the writer's life (published anonymously). We try to include as
much original material as possible. But if you see a good article that you
think the STATUS readership may have missed, please suggest it to the Editor.
Deadlines: initial submissions are due March 1st and October 1st for June and
January issues respectively. Contact the Editor:

4. Chandra Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) is pleased to announce the annual competition for
the Chandra Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, in cooperation with host
institutions throughout the United States. The primary objective of the Program
is to provide opportunities for postdoctoral research on problems that are
broadly related to the scientific mission of the Chandra X-ray Observatory and
compatible with the interests of the Host Institutions. This program is open to
applicants of any nationality who earn doctoral degrees between January 1, 2004
and September 1, 2007 in astronomy, physics, or related disciplines. The
Fellowships are tenable at any U.S. institution where Chandra-related research
can be carried out.
The Fellowship is initially for two years, with the expectation of a third year,
contingent upon performance and available funding. Subject to the availability
of NASA funding up to 5 Chandra Fellows will be appointed this year, through
grants to United States institutions.
The Call for Proposals for the Fellowship Program, which includes detailed
Program policies and application instructions, is available at

An application includes a cover form, research proposal, letters of reference,
curriculum vitae, and other relevant materials as detailed in the instructions.
Full instructions for submitting applications through the web are contained in
the Call for Proposals.
The application deadline is 2 November, 2006 (5:00 pm EST). The Chandra Fellow
appointments are expected to begin on or about 1 September 2007. Women and
members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

5. 2 Tenure Track Openings at the University of Washington

I would like to bring attention to 2 tenure track job openings in astrophysics,
neutrino physics, or experimental high energy physics at the University of

Note that this might be a nice possible solution for a 2-career couple.
We will start reviewing applications on Oct 1, and will continue until the
position is filled. The sooner a complete application is received, the better,
but all applications received before Dec 15 will receive a review, and later

6. Tenure-Track Position in Planetary Sciences – U. Colorado

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado
is searching to fill a tenure-track faculty position in planetary sciences. The
area of interest is open, but should complement the existing strengths within
the planetary program. Areas of particular interest include planetary geology,
geophysics, or geochemistry, outer-solar-system satellites, and extrasolar
planets. Potential for involvement in future spacecraft missions and experiments
is particularly valued. The position is likely to be filled at the Assistant
Professor level, although a more-senior appointment may be possible in
exceptional circumstances. LASP is a research institute in the Graduate School
at CU; the successful candidate will share an affiliation with the most
appropriate academic department, possibly including Astrophysical and Planetary
Sciences, Geological Sciences, or Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences.

7. Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position - Western Washington U.

The Physics and Astronomy Department of Western Washington University invites
applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in astronomy or
astrophysics starting September 2007. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in
astronomy, astrophysics or physics. Candidates should be actively engaged in
research in observational astronomy with a strong publication record, should
have experience teaching and be qualified and eager to teach upper and lower
division physics courses.
Post-doctoral experience is desired. A successful applicant will be expected to
pursue an on-campus research program that will involve undergraduate students
and provide projects for physics majors. She or he will also be expected to
write grant proposals to gain outside support. Applicants should submit (1) a
detailed cover letter describing their background and why they would be a good
match for our position, (2) Statement of research interests, (3) Statement of
teaching philosophy, and (4) a full CV including the names, addresses, e-mail
addresses and phone numbers of three professional references (Do not send

8. Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity

As part of a continuing commitment to advance scholars from underrepresented
groups in higher education, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity is pleased to announce the
availability of postdoctoral research appointments for a period of two years.
The purpose of the Program is to develop scholars from underrepresented groups
(including, in the physical sciences, women) for possible tenure track
appointments at the University of North Carolina and other research
universities.
Postdoctoral scholars will participate essentially full-time in research and may
teach at most one course per year. Applications for study in any discipline
represented at the University are welcome. The Department of Physics and
Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill strongly encourages
candidates interested in any of the subfields represented in its research

The stipend will be $35,625 per calendar year. Health benefits are available.
Some funds are available for research expenses, including travel. Students who

residents. This program is funded by the State of North Carolina and places

9. 2 Tenured or Tenure Track Openings at Texas A&M University

The Department of Physics at Texas A&M University has opened a search for at
least two new tenured and tenure-track positions in astronomy and astrophysics.
These positions are part of the university’s Reinvestment Plan to increase total
faculty ranks on campus by 20%, including positions in all areas of science. The
department is looking to fill positions in any area of astronomy and
astrophysics, observational or theoretical, including cosmology, large scale
structure, supernovae, stellar populations, star formation, and instrumentation.
Our department is committed to establish a vigorous program in astronomy and is
an active member of the Giant Magellan Telescope Project. We expect to make a
number of appointments over the next few years.
We seek outstanding candidates in any of these areas to submit an application

10. Assistant or Associate Professor, U. of Missouri- St. Louis

11. Faculty Position at the University of California, San Diego
