Unfortunately, I don't know where a better image of the catalog cover
is available (short of ordering a catalog from Edmund, which I have
done). It shows a woman in a tight red skirt lounging next to some
optical device, with the caption "RED HOT".
It will be a nice (and unfortunate!) addition to my "Women and
Science" course.
[Editor's note: The CSWA has scanned in some of the images from the
cover of the catalog and made them available (for now) at
http://www.dtm.ciw.edu/hannah/CSWA/ .
If you wish to express an opinion about this, the CEO of Edmund Optics
is Robert Edmund, and while the company's website does not provide an
email address for him, you can contact Edmund Optics at
sales
edmundoptics.com or by phone at (800) 363-1992 or
(856) 573-6250x6005. It may also be worth noting that Edmund Optics
is an industrial affiliate of University of Arizona's College of
Optical Sciences, which, in turn, shares some faculty with Steward
Observatory.
We thank Alycia Weinberger for her help in providing some of this
extra material.]

2. Conference to keep women undergrads in physics
From: Pat Knezek (pknezek
noao.edu)
The January 2007 issue of "Physics Today" has an interesting article
in its "Issues and Events" section, p. 32, entitled "Keeping women in
physics is aim of conference for undergrads." The article describes a
"grass roots" effort in southern California that is generating
interest country-wide. If you subscribe to Physics Today, and have
registered online, you can also access the article from:

3. Gender Equity study of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
From: Pepi Fabbiano (pepi

The CfA Gender Equity Committee (CGEC) has completed its study and submitted
its report to the CfA Director, Dr. C. Alcock.
The report, together with supporting material, can be accessed at
