The Latest Way to Discriminate Against Women
By Richard Whitmire
There's something all-American about filing lawsuits. McDonald's
coffee burn your lap? Dry cleaner lose your favorite pants? Sue! And
somehow we find it perfectly logical that social policy should be
guided by lawsuits. Upset by the University of Michigan's handing out
admissions preferences to black students? Find a willing complainant
and sue. Hey, quite often it works.
Why then does one of the biggest, sweetest lawsuits imaginable --
colleges routinely discriminating against women in their admissions
policies -- go unfiled? Recently U.S. News & World Report laid bare the
evidence. In desperate attempts to keep their campuses from swinging
hugely female, as far more women than men apply to college these days,
straight-A girls are told to look elsewhere, while B-average boys get
the fat envelope.]

2. Gender Diversity and Race Diversity
From: Pat Knezek (pknezek

There is an interesting article called "The Visible Man: Moving Beyond
Gender Wars to Build Diversity" in the "On Campus with Women"
publication of the Association of American Colleges and Universities,
Volume 35, 3. The author, a graduate student from UCLA, looks at
diversity studies with respect to race as well as gender, and urges
the educational system to look at increasing diversity overall rather
than focusing on "men against women." See:

3. CTIO Postdoctoral Fellow & REU Director
From: Pat Knezek (pknezek

Job Title - CTIO Postdoctoral Fellow & REU Director
Job No. 849
Center - CTIO
Location - La Serena, Chile
Date Posted - 07/12/2007
Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, a division of the National
Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) invites applications for a
scientific staff position at our facilities in La Serena, Chile. The
position will be filled at the postdoctoral level (3 years, 50%
service). Applicants are expected to be observational astronomers
interested in developing their career in the active NOAO research
environment, and highly motivated to be able to both manage and
develop the CTIO Student Programs and participate in a variety of
other observatory activities.
CTIO staff work on a wide variety of topics including aspects of
observational cosmology, galaxy properties and evolution, stellar
populations, star formation and evolution, development of adaptive
optics, and optical and infrared instrumentation - see
http://www.ctio.noao.edu/pers/staff.html. They are encouraged to
primarily use facilities available via NOAO for their research, which
in addition to NOAO telescopes include Gemini, SOAR, and several other
large telescopes accessible via the TSIP program.
The service role primarily consists of managing the highly successful
CTIO student programs, which includes the NSF funded Research
Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program and the CTIO Practica de
Investigaciones en Astronomia (PIA), run in the southern summer months
(Jan-Mar). We are planning to expand our student programs in
partnership with one or more US universities in response to the NSF
Partnerships in Astronomy & Astrophysics Research and Education
(PAARE) program, which seeks to enhance diversity in astronomy and
astrophysics research. These activities are expected to occupy at
least one third of the time of the successful candidate (~ full time
in the January-March months when the REU and PIA students are resident
in La Serena). For more than a decade the CTIO REU/PIA program has
provided a unique opportunity for a mixed group of six to eight US and
Chilean undergraduate students to live and work together on the La
Serena campus of AURA. In an international environment under some of
the best skies in the world, the students learn about astronomy by
doing it. The program includes hands-on observing using CTIO
telescopes, individual research projects under the direction of staff
astronomers, and interaction with scientists at the forefront of the
field. The students present results of their research at the following
January AAS meeting. For more insight into the work of the CTIO REU
Site Director, please discuss the position with past and current site
directors, reachable through the REU mail address
ctioreu
ctio.noao.edu.
The position is based at the AURA campus in La Serena, Chile, which
includes the offices of CTIO, SOAR and Gemini-South, with the offices
of Las Campanas Observatory next door. The working language is
English. Staff members have excellent benefits and living conditions,
an overseas allowance, support for Spanish lessons, an educational
stipend for dependent children, international health care benefits,
and annual travel to the point of hire. Bilingual education for
children is available at the International School of La Serena, which
was co-founded by and still supported by AURA. The city of La Serena
is a major seaside tourist destination in South America, with a
climate very similar to San Diego, California.
Applicants should electronically submit a vitae, a statement of
current research interests, details of experience relevant to the REU
or similar student programs, and the names of three references. If
email is not available you may send material postal mail to address
indicated below. Please indicate job title and job number with all
submissions. Applications received prior to August 31, 2007 are
assured of full consideration, however, applications will be accepted
until the position is filled. Further details can be obtained from

Scientific Programmer II - Job #851
Tucson Arizona 07/23/2007
The National Solar Observatory (NSO) has an opening for a full-time
Scientific Programmer to further develop both instrument control
software and data processing algorithms for advanced solar
instrumentation on Kitt Peak. Responsibilities of this 2-year
position include the development of software to improve the observing
and telescope interface software for the NSO Array Camera (NAC). The
NAC is an infrared camera system for forefront investigations of the
Sun at the NSO McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak. Additional
responsibilities during the term of the appointment will include
contributions to algorithm development for data processing and
archiving for the new SOLIS facility on Kitt Peak. SOLIS obtains high
precision observations of the Sun's magnetic field daily for a wide
variety of applications in solar physics, space weather, and climate
modeling. Extending this position beyond 2 years would be contingent
on the availability of funds. See the NSO home page at www.nso.edu/
for more information on NSO telescopes and instrumentation dedicated
to world-class studies of the Sun.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering,
mathematics, or physical science, and a minimum of 2 years (though at
least 6 years is preferred) of relevant software experience.

be comfortable with a variety of programming languages & applications
including C/C++, Perl, FORTRAN, IDL, LabView, and MySQL. Solar
research and CCD data processing experience is preferred. In addition,
the position requires excellent communication and documentation
skills. Experience with control of simple hardware (stepper motors,
optics interface electronics), and basic knowledge of optics and
spectroscopy, image acquisition and processing, and motor control is
required. Ability to work at Kitt Peak is essential.
