1. Vassiliki Kalogera is 2008 MGM Award Winner
From: WIPHYS October 5, 2007
Congratulations to Vassiliki Kalogera, Associate Professor at
Northwestern University, who has been named the 2008 winner of the Maria
Goeppert Mayer Award for her fundamental contributions to the study of
the evolution and fate of compact objects in binary systems, focusing on
their observations via X-rays and on their importance for gravitational
wave detectors.
The MGM Award was established to recognized and enhance outstanding
achievement by a woman physicist in the early years of her career, and
to provide opportunities for her to present these achievements to others
through public lectures in the spirit of Maria Goeppert Mayer. The award
consists of $2,500 plus a $4,000 travel allowance to provide
opportunities for the recipient to give lectures in her field of physics
at four institutions and at the meeting of the APS at which the award is
bestowed and a certificate citing the contributions made by the
recipient. More information at

The feature article in this issue is an "Interview with Dr. Debra
Fischer, Planet-Hunter" and in the "Ask Urania" section, the muse of
astronomy answers the question, "What is astronomy?" There is also a
short review of the new book, "Math Doesn't Suck: how to survive middle
school math without losing your mind or breaking a nail" by Danica
McKellar and much more which I hope you will find of interest.

5. CITA Faculty Position: Canada Research Chair
From: Nina Ladocha
CITA, a national centre for theoretical astrophysics hosted by the
University of Toronto, invites applications for a tenure track faculty
position. The search is open to candidates at the Assistant or Associate
Professor level. Appointment to commence July 1, 2008.
Applicants from any area of theoretical astrophysics are encouraged to
apply; we seek candidates with exceptionally strong and internationally
recognized research records, and outstanding promise of future research
accomplishments.
Additional selection criteria include demonstrated ability in teaching,
in particular working with research fellows and graduate students, and

CITA is an institute within the Faculty of Arts and Science, University
of Toronto. The present complement of research staff includes six
faculty and over 25 research fellows. The unique research environment at
CITA is enhanced by close ties to the Departments of Astronomy and
Astrophysics, the Department of Physics, and the Canadian Institute for
Advanced Research Cosmology and Gravity Program. We invite prospective
candidates to visit our home page at
www.cita.utoronto.ca .
Applicants should send: a curriculum vitae, a bibliography, a statement
of research interests, and arrange for three letters of recommendation
to be sent to:
Prof. Norman Murray, Director
CITA, University of Toronto
60 St. George Street
Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 3H8
All materials should reach CITA by December 1, 2007.
The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its
community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority
group members, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of
sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further

6. Tenure-Track Appointment, Physics Department, Williams College
From: WIPHYS October 5, 2007
The Williams College Physics Department invites applications for a
tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level (a senior
appointment is possible in exceptional circumstances) with teaching
duties to start September 2008. We seek an energetic individual with a
strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, including the development
of a productive on-campus research program involving undergraduates.
Startup funds will be available. Ph.D. required; postdoctoral research
experience desirable. Williams is a highly selective, private,
coeducational liberal arts college, with eight physics and two astronomy
faculty. We have about 15 physics and astrophysics majors per class, and
more than half go on to graduate programs. A typical teaching assignment
is one lecture and two laboratory sections per semester. The College is
actively working to increase the ethnic and gender diversity of its
science majors and seeks an individual who can help us meet these goals.
Williams College is an EO/AA employer.
Mail CV, statements on teaching philosophy and research plans, and three
letters of recommendation to: Professor Sarah Bolton, Chair, Department
of Physics, Williams College, Williamstown, MA 01267.
Applications received by December 1, 2007 will receive full
consideration. For additional information about the Physics Department,
