1. Century of Physics posters still available

2. APS Child Care Grants

Thinking about attending the APS March Meeting in New Orleans? Small
grants of $200 are available to assist meeting attendees who are
bringing small children. Applications must be received by Jan 15 to be
considered by a subcommittee of the CSWP. If the number of requests
exceeds the funding available, preference will be given to applicants in
the early stages of their careers. If you are interested in sharing

3. Senior Visualization Lab/Planetarium Designer and Technician

Colgate University invites applications for the new position of Senior
Visualization Lab/Planetarium Designer and Technician associated to its new
Visualization Laboratory and Planetarium. Colgate University is a private
liberal-art college with an enrollment of about 2800 students. It is located
in the village Hamilton, in Central New York State.
The primary responsibility of the Senior Visualization Lab/Planetarium
Designer and Technician will be to operate, program, and assist faculty and
students across the curriculum in the creation of content for the Evans &
Sutherland Digistar 3 laser projection system in the newly constructed Ho
Science Center Visualization Lab. The facility is a state of the art 3D
Digital Theater with complete planetarium capabilities. The senior
visualization lab/planetarium designer and technician will be the main point
of contact between Colgate and Evans & Sutherland for the hardware and
software maintenance of the Digistar 3 system as well as an active
participant in any relevant user groups or professional organizations. The
senior visualization lab/planetarium designer and technician will also help
to plan and produce outreach activities and events utilizing the 3D Digital
Theater for the community and regional school systems. This position will
reside in the Ho Science Center and will report to the Director of Academic
Technologies within Information Technology Services (ITS).
Qualifications (Education and Experience):
--Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
--Knowledge and experience in high level scripting languages such as HTML,
XML, and Flash
--Experience designing 2D and 3D graphics
--Ability to interact with and train faculty and students from all academic
disciplines and with a variety of skill levels
--Aptitude for science and mathematics
--Good public speaking and interpersonal skills
--Must be available to work some evenings and weekends
--Must be capable of working effectively and collegially with a diverse
group of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on a daily basis
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
--Experience operating and programming a planetarium, visualization
laboratory, or 3 dimensional interactive environment
--Experience with Adobe Creative Suite applications
--Knowledge of astronomy
--Advanced degree

4. Lecturer in Astronomy at Georgia Southern University

The Department of Physics in the Allen E. Paulson College of Science and
Technology invites nominations and applications for the position of
Lecturer in Astronomy. Georgia Southern University, an institution of
the University System of Georgia, is the largest and most comprehensive
center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia. Georgia
Southern University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching as a Doctoral/Research institution. A
residential university serving over 16,000 students in Fall 2006,
Georgia Southern's hallmark is a superior undergraduate experience

Position Description: Reporting to the Department Chair, the Lecturer
position will be expected to perform the duties of a regular,
tenure-track faculty member. The teaching assignment will be primarily
in the astronomy curriculum and may include a section of Introductory
Astronomy which has a large (250-300) enrollment. The successful
candidate will be encouraged to teach and/or develop advanced
undergraduate courses in their area of expertise as the Department is
currently developing a concentration in astronomy as part of a physics
undergraduate degree. Applicants with demonstrated proficiency in any
area of astronomy or astrophysics are encouraged to apply. The position
is a 9-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate
with qualifications and experience. Lecturer faculty are appointed to an
annually renewable contract with renewal based upon an annual
performance evaluation by the department chair.
Required Qualifications:
(1) PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics with expertise in
astronomy, or a related field by August 1, 2008. (2) Ability to
establish an active and productive research program involving
undergraduates. (3) Demonstrated command of written and spoken
English. (4) Evidence of teaching and research abilities. (5) Ability to
contribute to a positive work environment in the Department, College,
and University.
Preferred Qualifications:
(1) At least one year experience teaching astronomy at the
college/university level. (2) Experience teaching a large section of
General Astronomy. (3) Experience teaching a diverse student population.

position is filled. The position starting date is Aug. 1, 2008. A

Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure track position as
Assistant Professor of Astronomy. The ideal candidate will have a
Ph.D. plus 2 to 6 years of post-doctoral experience. We seek a person
who can teach across the curriculum, extend the research areas and
techniques covered by the department, interact well with existing
faculty and involve undergraduate and graduate students in forefront
research. The Astronomy Department graduates about 4 majors per year and
sends about 50% on to graduate study. We also run a small MA program
that has been quite successful in preparing students, including those
with non-traditional backgrounds, for admission to

6. Postdoctoral Research Position, Gravitational-Wave Astrophysics and Data
Analysis, Syracuse University

The Syracuse Gravitation and Cosmology Group invites application for a
postdoctoral research position in gravitational-wave astrophysics and
data analysis, starting September 1, 2008 or possibly earlier. The
initial appointment will be for one year, renewable up to three years
contingent on continued funding and satisfactory performance. The
Syracuse Gravitation and Cosmology Group consists of faculty members
Cristian Armendariz-Picon, Duncan Brown, Mark Trodden, Peter Saulson,
Richard Schnee, 2 postdocs and 8 graduate students. The group has a
broad range of research interests including gravitational wave
phenomenology and data analysis, theoretical and experimental cosmology,
gravitational-wave detector characterization and experimental
techniques, and relativity theory. The group has a strong connection to
the Cornell-Caltech numerical relativity group through Duncan Brown. The
Syracuse group has excellent computing facilities and has recently
purchased a 320 CPU core Intel Xeon cluster for gravitational wave data
analysis and source modeling. The successful candidate's research will
be focused on searches for gravitational waves in data from the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), development of new
data analysis techniques for ground and space-based gravitational-wave
detectors, and the physics of gravitational-wave sources. Applicants

9. Faculty Position in Theoretical Astrophysics/Cosmology/Astroparticle
Physics, Brown University

The Department of Physics at Brown University invites applications for
an Assistant Professor position in Theoretical Astrophysics/
Cosmology/Astroparticle Physics starting in the academic year 2008. We
are looking for candidates with both demonstrated accomplishment in
research, the potential for excellence in teaching, and promise for
future achievements. Applicants who would also benefit from interaction
with existing experimental and theoretical efforts in astrophysics,
cosmology, astro-particle and high energy physics are encouraged.
Current faculty at Brown are very active across the fields of cosmology,
astrophysics, particle astrophysics and high energy physics. The
research includes leading efforts in investigation of dark energy, and
dark matter as well as studies of large-scale structure and galaxy
formation. Specific projects include: using large scale gravitational
lensing surveys with direct involvement in DLS and JDEM/Destiny, a
comprehensive program of CMB observations (including polarization
measurements) using WMAP, MBI and EBEX, and a parallel program of
sub-millimeter surveys using BLAST-pol. There is an active program of
direct dark matter detection using CDMSII, XENON10 and LUX experiments.
Detector development for the next generation x-ray satellite missions is
also being pursued. High energy experimental research is focused on the
LHC and Tevatron, including searches for Higgs, SUSY, dark matter, extra
dimensions and black holes. The high energy theory group is active in
quantum gravity (including applications to black holes and the very
early universe), QCD, string theory and numerical approaches to quantum
field theory.
