1. NSF Grants For Postdocs
From: WIPHYS, November 20, 2007
An NSF Program Officer sent me this link about Postdoctoral funding
support: http://nsf.gov/funding/education.jsp?org=NSF&fund_type=3
(To get there from the NSF home page, choose "Looking for Funding?" then
"Specialized Information" then "Post Doctoral").
None of them is specific to physics. Several of them are open to any
area of the Foundation. Our POs are interested in hearing any ideas for
support postdocs which they haven't yet considered, so I plan to forward
a synopsis of the listserv comments back to them.

3. 2008 GLAST Fellowship Program
From: Sandy Barnes [Sandra.L.Barnes
nasa.gov]
The NASA Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) Program is
initiating a Fellowship Program. NASA plans to award up to 3 GLAST
fellowships in 2008. The goal of these fellowships is to stimulate an
infusion of new ideas, techniques, and approaches that will enhance the
scientific return of GLAST which will be launched in 2008.
The fellowship provides support for up to three years at an annual
stipend of approximately $56,000 plus defined benefits and allowances.
GLAST fellowships are open to scientists who have received a Ph.D.,
Sc.D., or equivalent degree in astronomy, physics, or a related
discipline before the start of the fellowship. Support for each fellow
will be provided through an award to a US host institution, designated
by the fellow, where the fellow will be resident.
Awards will be made on the basis of the applicant's research proposal --
its science merit and relevance to gamma-ray astrophysics, and the
science of the GLAST mission. DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS
DECEMBER 7, 2007. Award offers will be made in February, 2008, with the
fellowships expected to begin in September, 2008.
The fellowship program is administered by the Center for Research and
Exploration in Science and Technology (CRESST) for NASA and the GLAST
Mission. Further information and application instructions can be found at:

4. Professional Skills Development Workshops
From: WIPHYS, November 20, 2007
The American Physical Society will offer one-day workshops for post-docs
and newly-tenured (or tenure track) women physicists on March 9 (New
Orleans) and April 11 (St. Louis, MO), in association with the 2008 APS
annual meetings. Women of color are especially encouraged to apply.
Deadlines to apply are December 10, 2007 for the March workshop and
January 4, 2008 for the April workshop. First consideration will be
given to applications received by the deadlines.
The workshops will have one session for post docs and one for women
faculty. They will offer professional training on effective
negotiation, communication and leadership skills, as well as a special
opportunity for networking at the reception afterwards. Participants
may receive a stipend of up to $850 towards hotel and travel expenses.
Details are now posted at
http://www.aps.org/programs/women/workshops/skills/index.cfm.
To ensure maximum interaction, the workshops will be limited in size. Support
for these workshops is pending from the National Science Foundation.

5. Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics
From: Elise Novitski [elisenovitski
gmail.com
The University of Michigan, the University of Southern California, and
Yale University are seeking participants for simultaneous regional
Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics that they will be hosting
on January 18-20, 2008. Conference highlights will include research
talks by prominent women physicists from across the country, career and
graduate school panels, and lab tours. Undergraduate participants will
have the opportunity to present their own research in a 10-minute talk
or during a poster session. Conference registration and food will be
covered for all participants and grants are available for travel and
lodging.
Our conferences seek to bring undergraduate physicists together with
peers and mentors in order to discuss science and life issues. Women
have been historically underrepresented in the physical sciences, and
our goal is to address this inequality and to seek solutions. In
addition, we hope to inspire continued interest in physics for all
participants and to present information about how to pursue this
interest.
Registration deadlines are December 1 for the USC conference, December
12 for the Yale conference, and December 17 for the University of
Michigan conference. More information, schedules, and registration are
available at these sites:
