1. Comment on "An 'Anecdotal' Longitudinal Study"
From: Julia Kennefick [jkennef
uark.edu]
I was just reading the article by Travis Metcalfe in this month's AAS
Newsletter titled "An 'Anecdotal' Longitudinal Study" where he discusses
the career paths of 11 students who entered astronomy graduate school in
1996. Of the 11, (7 male, 4 female) 5 eventually graduate with a
Ph.D. (3 male and 2 female, about 1/2 of each gender). He concludes
that this sample "did not reveal any systematic problems in the culture
of the field, since both male and female...students were proportionally
represented along each major career path." What is amazing about this
conclusion is that at this point, all three males have obtained tenure
track positions either at labs or at a university, while one female is
still in a postdoc, and the other female has taken a non-tenure track
job at a small university. Even from this small, anecdotal sample, it
seems pretty clear that there is a difference in outcomes. I look
forward to the full study.

MEKO - International Measurement Confederation (www.imeko.org)
Technical Committee 11 "Metrological Infrastructure" (TC 11) organises
First International Symposium
RMO 2008 - Regional Metrology Organisations 2008:
"Metrology, testing, and accreditation - breaking the trading barriers"
in Cavtat - Dubrovnik, Croatia
November 12-15, 2008.
The aim of the Symposium is to bring together International
Organisations - BIPM - Bureau International des Poids et Mesures, OIML
- International Organisation for Legal Metrology, and ILAC -
International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation, and Regional
Metrology Organisations (RMO's) - AFRIMET, APMP, COOMET, EURAMET,
EUROLAB, SIM. Representatives of the international organisations and
chairpersons of RMO's will describe functioning and prospective of
their organisations. The representatives of the National Metrology
Institutes (NMI's) will be invited to present their efforts and to
discuss hot topics and challenges - http://www.rmo2008.org/programme.html
Part of the Symposium will be the 20th International Metrology
Symposium.
Technical Sessions:
- Mass and related quantities (including force, pressure, air density,
torque, viscosity and hardness)
- Electricity and magnetism (including RF and microwave)
- Length (form measurements, complex geometry, angular measurements,
laser measurements, nanometrology, surface texture)
- Time and frequency
- Thermometry (including thermophysical properties and humidity)
- Ionising radiation (including radiometry and dosimetry)
- Photometry and radiometry (including fiber optics)
- Flow (including fluid properties)
- Acoustics, ultrasound and vibration (including accelerometry)
- Amount of substance.
Potential authors are invited to submit final papers in English via the
website (instructions on web site: http://rmo2008.org/authors.html )
The authors of selected papers, presented during 1st RMO 2008 and 20th
Metrology Symposium, will be encoureged to submit updated and extended
versions of those papers to the journal Measurement (Elsevier, IMEKO -

Important dates:
Paper Submission Deadline: June 2, 2008
Acceptance Notification: June 16, 2008

3. CSWP/FIAP Networking Breakfast
From: WIPHYS December 11, 2007
The Committee on the Status of Women in Physics (CSWP) and the Forum on
Industrial and Applied Physics (FIAP) will co-sponsor a networking
breakfast from 7:30-9:30 am on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at the APS
meeting in New Orleans. Both men and women are welcome to attend.
Enjoy a delicious full breakfast and hear an informal talk. Cost: $15.
$5 for physics students, thanks to FIAP's generosity. Please
pre-register at
http://www.aps.org/meetings/march/others/special/cswp_fiap.cfm
as there may be only limited space for walk-ins at this popular event.

4. Childcare Grants At APS Meetings
From: WIPHYS December 11, 2007
Small grants of up to $200 are available to assist meeting attendees who
are bringing small children to the March and April APS meetings. Please
complete the short form at http://www.aps.org/meetings/march/general.cfm
and submit it. Applications must be received by Jan 15 (for March) and
February 29 (for April) to be considered by a subcommittee of the CSWP.
In the event that the number of requests for grants exceeds the funding
available, preference will be given to applicants in the early stages of
their careers. If you are interested in childcare sharing, you may also
use this bulletin board to connect with other parents. There will also
be a small unsupervised play area in the convention center for
parents/caregivers and children to relax (bring your own toys!).
If you would like to share childcare and want to connect with other
parents, visit the Childcare Bulletin Board and leave a message.
Please do not contact APS about this; all arrangements should be made
between individuals and APS assumes no liability.
