1. Conference on Formation and Evolution of Globular Clusters
From: Fred Rasio [rasio

"Formation and Evolution of Globular Clusters"
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, UC Santa Barbara
January 12 - 16, 2009
Globular clusters are complex astrophysical systems governed by
stellar dynamics, stellar evolution, the properties and the dynamical
history of their host galaxies, as well as the interplay among all
these elements. The formation and evolution of globular clusters is a
subject with implications for all areas of astrophysics, from
cosmology and galaxy formation to stellar evolution. There has been
extraordinary recent progress, both at the observational level (e.g.,
from Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra observations of both Galactic
and extragalactic clusters) and in theoretical work (e.g., from N-body
simulations of globular cluster dynamics on supercomputers).
The three main themes of this conference are:
1. Dynamical modelling of globular cluster evolution
2. Compact objects in Galactic and extragalatic globular clusters
3. Formation and evolution of globular cluster systems
This will be the opening conference for a 3-month KITP program on the same subject; please see http://www.kitp.ucsb.edu/activities/auto/?id=948 for more information.
Organizers: Fred Rasio, Alison Sills, Enrico Vesperini, and Steve Zepf

Studies offerings. Excellences in teaching and extensive experience
as a hands-on experimentalist are expected. Ph.D. required and
post-doctoral experience would be a plus. Salary commensurate with
experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will also be
encouraged to develop a research program supported by external grants

projects as well as research collaborations at the William J. Hughes
Technical Center of the Federal Aviation Administration located 5
miles from campus.
