Notes:
So what can we learn from our experience? The first thing for publishers is to begin innovating more rapidly. If they dont provide things the users want, the users do have the capability to take things into their own hands.
In detail, it is important for publishers to realize that what they do affects everyone in the whole information chain. Clearly we learned a lot by planning together with the library community. But it is also important to consult with what I call effective end users; those who are visionary and thoughtful. Our best ideas came from a handful of users. If we had designed by committee, we would have failed.
But, publishers must re-engineer their whole publication process, and rein in their competitive instincts. A tightly integrated system provides enormous benefits to the end users. Cooperation will pay off for everyone. The same goes for libraries. Publishers have to realize who their customers are.
But, most of all, publishers have to really get in touch with their users needs. And it takes more than focus groups and internal committees.
