Job Description

We seek a postdoctoral candidate to join the Particle Astrophysics group at the Michigan State University Department of Physics and Astronomy to work on observational high-energy astrophysics with a focus on X-ray observation of the Galactic center and nearby galaxies.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead data analysis on X-ray observations of nuclei of nearby galaxies, including supermassive black holes, Galactic center molecular clouds and magnetic filaments, using NuSTAR, Chandra and XMM-Newton data. Candidates with a strong X-ray data analysis background are encouraged to apply. Expertise in optical or radio observations are preferred but not required. The appointment will be initially for two years with the expectation of a third-year renewal subject to mutual agreement.

Michigan State hosts a growing program in particle astrophysics, including efforts on IceCube, HAWC TeV gamma-ray and various X-ray observatories. The group benefits from close connections to the high energy physics group. The candidate will have the opportunity of contributing to other on-going projects in the group, including IceCube neutrino data analysis, R&D for next generation neutrino detector P-ONE, detection and analysis of millimeter-band transients with SPT and CMB-S4.

Applicants should submit (1) a CV, including a publication list, (2) a statement of research interests and experience, (3) at least three references at https://careers.msu.edu, position # 947565.

Review of applications will begin on July 1, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. MSU is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. MSU is committed to achieving excellence through cultural diversity.
