This image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows a spiral galaxy named NGC 972. This galaxy exhibits areas of intense star formation, marked by reddish clouds, and areas of dense dust, seen as dark clouds. Recently, researchers investigated whether spiral galaxies that are both extremely dusty and have high rates of star formation could be the evolutionary link between star-forming spiral galaxies and massive quiescent galaxies in which star formation has stopped.
