Job Description

Associate or Senior Editor, Nature Astronomy

Location: New York, Jersey City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Berlin or Heidelberg (hybrid working)

Deadline: May 8th, 2024

Nature Astronomy (https://www.nature.com/natastron/) — a high-quality international online journal covering all areas of astronomy, astrophysics and the planetary sciences — is seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to join its editorial team on a permanent basis. In addition to publishing original research, Nature Astronomy publishes Comments, Reviews, Features and Correspondence from across all disciplines connected to astronomy, as well as from a full range of voices. Editors work on all aspects of the journal and will have an opportunity to write Editorials, Research Highlights and other content.

Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in an astronomy-related discipline and the ideal candidate will have expertise in cosmology or gravitational waves, although other specialisations will be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a general interest in other areas of research beyond their own. Postdoctoral experience may be an advantage but is not required. Editorial experience is also not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience may be considered for a Senior Editor position. We especially encourage candidates from marginalized communities to apply.

Situated within a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes NatureNature Geoscience, Nature Physics and Nature Communications, the successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor of the journal and will work both independently and closely with a team of editors. They will primarily be responsible for manuscript selection and overseeing the peer-review process, and will play an important role in determining the representation of the fields they handle for the journal. They will also be involved in the commissioning and editing of Review, Comment and News & Views articles. An interest in engaging with topical issues for the scientific community would be welcome.

This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent communication and literary skills, and a keen interest in the practice and dissemination of science are prerequisites. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through visits to research groups and attendance at international conferences (both online and in person), therefore the successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be willing to travel (when appropriate and required).

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis, allows for hybrid working and will be based in one of the following editorial offices: New York, Washington DC, Jersey City, Philadelphia, Berlin, Heidelberg; internal applicants in other journals editorial hub locations are also welcome to apply. Candidates will be considered as they apply, therefore, early applications are encouraged.

To apply please send the following:

1. A cover letter telling us who you are and why you want to become a journal editor at Nature Astronomy, as well as your salary expectations, notice period and preferred office location.

2. A CV detailing your education, relevant employment history, list of published scientific papers, and any other achievements that you feel demonstrate your suitability for the position.

3. A 250-word Research Highlight in the style of Nature Astronomy (see https://www.nature.com/natastron or contact the journal/Chief Editor for examples) covering a recent peer-reviewed research paper that has caught your attention. The paper you highlight should not be from your own (or a previous) research group or from Nature Astronomy and should be on a topic that you find interesting and exciting. The Research Highlight should explain the significance and implications of the research to someone who is an astronomer or planetary scientist but not a specialist in the subject.
