Software Project Deputy Coordinator – SUSS

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Software Project Deputy Coordinator in CTAO Computing. This position is for a specialist working on the Science User Support System (SUSS) of the CTAO.

The SUSS manages the software systems and tools handling all aspects of high-level scientific operations. This includes tasks ranging from proposal handling and observation scheduling to providing multi-messenger support, analyzing scientific data, and offering support to Observatory users. Additionally, SUSS serves as the primary gateway for scientists to access data and services through the CTAO science archive and portal. The SUSS team is currently setting up the work package, with international teams acting as in-kind contributors.

In the role of SUSS Deputy Coordinator, the successful candidate will work with the SUSS Coordinator to define, develop, and deploy the SUSS system. Responsibilities include coordinating the efforts of SUSS sub-system developers, ensuring product quality assurance, and supporting the specification of data models. As a member of the SUSS Work Package coordination team, the successful candidate will work closely with SUSS sub-system contributors, the SUSS Assembly, Integration, and Verification (AIV) team, and other experts in the Computing department. This role is pivotal in contributing to the construction of software for one of the largest scientific installations ever built.

Your responsibilities:

  • Participate in the management and coordination of the construction of the SUSS.
  • Support the SUSS architecture design.
  • Participate in the coordination and guidance of the production, testing, and integration of SUSS components by SUSS contributors and CTAO personnel.
  • Oversee the acceptance testing of the SUSS elements and the integration of SUSS with other CTAO elements, in close collaboration with the CTAO Software Coordinators and systems engineering team.
  • Coordinate the deployment and commissioning of the SUSS software in the CTAO data centers.
  • Develop staging and deployment scenarios for the SUSS.
  • Organize the SUSS software maintenance strategy for the CTAO lifetime.
  • Report regularly on the progress of the SUSS implementation work to the SUSS coordinator and the CTAO Computing Coordinator.

Your skills and qualifications:

  • Completed higher education in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, physics, mathematics, or equivalent knowledge.
  • At least five years of relevant work experience; a few years of experience leading a software team would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with software maintenance activities is considered an asset.
  • Experience with data processing, data management, web services, and content management systems.
  • Deep understanding of information technology approaches, applications (which may include scientific applications), tools, and methodologies, as well as a broad background in a variety of technology platforms. A good command of object-oriented design principles and design patterns.
  • Experience in aspects of the software lifecycle: management, requirements, architecture, design, code, test, integration, and deployment.
  • Familiarity with formal software requirements engineering and architecture specification practices will be considered a plus. Familiarity with UML and/or SysML will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player in an international, multi-cultural, distributed, and complex project environment.
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex technical and scientific information.
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills with an eye for detail, precision, and consistency.
  • Excellent communication skills and a command of English are essential.

You will be reporting to: CTAO SUSS Coordinator

What we offer: CTAO offers an attractive remuneration package, including a competitive salary. The contract is an open-term contract subject to the successful completion of the probation period.

Duty Station: CTAO Science Data Management Center in Zeuthen (Germany) with visits to the CTAO Headquarters in Bologna (Italy) and contributor sites.
