Job Description

The Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) invites applications for a highly motivated and dedicated STEM Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team and contribute to our ongoing efforts in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The research-focused Postdoctoral Fellow will play a pivotal role in conducting research, analyzing data, and developing new initiatives that promote a diverse and inclusive culture in line with our organization’s values and goals. The successful candidate also will conduct research up to 50% of their time (level to be negotiated) on galaxy formation and evolution with Director Lisa Kewley.

The STEM Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with CfA Director Lisa Kewley and CfA Associate Director Kim-Vy Tran on:

  1. Literature Review and Research: Conduct comprehensive literature reviews on diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in academia, particularly within STEM fields. Collaborate with the team to identify successful strategies and best practices from existing research.
  2. Data Analysis: Analyze existing institutional data and external research findings to inform the development and assessment of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Utilize quantitative and qualitative methodologies to extract meaningful insights.
  3. Research: Conduct independent research in diversity and inclusion in astronomy, focusing on the recruitment, retention of people from underrepresented minority groups. Research may include, but is not limited to (1) analysis of publications, citations, and other quantitative factors that may be impacted by implicit bias, (2) analysis of retention data and exit surveys to understand the reasons for departure of people from underrepresented minority groups, (3) analysis of promotions data to identify differences in promotions timescale and expectations for people across different demographic groups.
  4. STEM Publications: Prepare research findings, initiatives, and progress for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Disseminate findings through reports, presentations, documents, and other relevant media. Ensure data accuracy and integrity in all publications.
  5. Community Outreach and Partnerships: Building partnerships with external organizations, universities, or community groups to foster a broader impact and exchange of ideas.
  6. Professional Development: Participate in relevant workshops, seminars, and conferences to stay updated on the latest advancements in diversity and inclusion research and practices.
  7. Astrophysics: Collaborate with CfA Director Lisa Kewley and her research team on projects related to galaxy formation and evolution.

The position is for two years and renewable for a third year depending on performance. The nominal starting date is September 1, 2024, but an earlier or later start is negotiable.
