Job Description

University of Tartu, Tartu Observatory (Estonia) invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of high-energy astrophysics. The position is initially for one year but has good prospects for extension, depending on the performance of the applicant and on the availability of funding. The starting time is negotiable. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in astrophysics or a closely related discipline.

The successful candidate will be able to conduct his or her own independent research on a topic related to energetic transient phenomena including novae, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, tidal disruption events etc. He/she will also be able to participate in the ongoing development and application of numerical tools and methods for multiwavelength radiative transfer modeling of various new classes of cataclysmic events discovered in recent decades such as superluminous supernovae and luminous fast blue optical transients. Candidates with expertise and interest in theoretical (astro)physics, high-energy transient phenomena, radiative processes and transfer, and/or computational astrophysics are particularly encouraged to apply. The work will be carried out under the guidance of Dr. Indrek Vurm.

Applications received by April 26, 2024 will receive full consideration; the call will remain open until the position is filled. Applications should contain the following: a cover letter motivating your application, a Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications and a statement of research interests (max. 3 pages). Please also provide contact information for two individuals willing to provide a reference letter upon request. Note that we will request such letters only for a subset of applicants after an initial selection step. Applications should be sent in a single PDF file to [email protected].

Tartu Observatory is among the leading astronomical research institutes in North-Eastern Europe. It offers a modern and friendly work environment and conducts research in broad and active international collaboration. It currently hosts 17 staff members and 10 PhD students in astrophysics.

The successful applicant is offered a gross salary starting from 2600 Euros per month (2000 Euros net), depending on his/her work experience, with prospects for a further upgrade.
