The Job

SkuTek Instrumentation has an opening for an Electrical Engineer to work on development of scientific data acquisition instruments for experimental nuclear physics, high energy physics, particle astrophysics, and related fields. The focus will include firmware for field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), embedded real time software, testing the instruments with actual detectors, user interfaces, and software for efficient data storage, management, and transmission. The position is appropriate for a computer-savvy and instrument-savvy electrical engineer, computer scientist, physicist, or astronomer. We expect fast on-job learning of essential techniques (e.g., FPGA firmware and embedded software development, testing and debugging electronic boards, advanced programming, setting up particle detectors, etc.). The mid-career and late-career persons are also encouraged to apply.

Skills And Qualifications:

  • Firmware programming with VHDL / Verilog;
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits;
  • Familiarity with detectors of particles, gamma rays, X-rays, or visual photons (phototubes, scintillators, semiconductor detectors, photodiodes, etc.);
  • Hands-on experience with scientific instrumentation;
  • Familiarity with data acquisition and signal processing electronics;
  • Familiarity with data analysis in the fields mentioned above;
  • Programming embedded processors (device drivers, interrupt handlers, etc.);
  • Experience with programming under Windows and Linux;
  • A degree in Engineering, Physics, Astronomy, or equivalent work experience.

Technical R&D Development Areas:

  • Development and troubleshooting FPGA firmware using VHDL and/or Verilog;
  • Interfacing embedded processors with firmware and hardware;
  • Troubleshooting the instruments, making use of schematics and PCB layout;
  • Assembling and working with particle and gamma-ray detectors;
  • Developing user interface software and user manuals under Linux and Windows.

Other Duties:

  • Perform basic IT services (help with maintaining company website and systems);
  • Maintain and organize software in GitLab;
  • Contribute to writing documentation and technical notes for our products.
  • Contribute to finding new application areas for our products.

Compensation Notes

The exact range will depend on experience and qualifications. We use wage estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics as the basis for our salary range.
