We’re Halfway Through the AAS Spring Campaign

Diane Frendak

Diane Frendak American Astronomical Society (AAS)

This week marks the midpoint of the Society’s Spring 2015 Campaign to raise funds for AAS prizes, programs, and activities. It’s also the midpoint for the new Annabelle Eames Powell Memorial Challenge Grant in Support of the Annie Jump Cannon Award in Astronomy. Donations are vital to helping the Society continue its mission to enhance and share humanity’s scientific understanding of the universe. To drive our future success, please make a contribution today.

The Cannon Award celebrates outstanding research and the promise for future exceptional work by postdoctoral woman researchers. In a generous show of support for the distinguished contributions to the advancement of astronomy made by women, AAS member J. W. Powell of Reed College’s Physics Department has pledged to match, dollar for dollar up to an agreed-upon cap, all donations received for the Cannon Award Fund through 15 August 2015. Powell’s inspiration for this challenge grant is the memory of his late mother, Annabelle Eames Powell, a staunch advocate for women in science, who died 19 October 2014 at age 90.

Visit our online donation page for short descriptions of additional AAS and Division donation opportunities. Donate $250 or more to any fund, and you will be invited to the donor reception and donor lounge at the 227th AAS meeting in Florida in January 2016. The AAS is grateful for support from its members and friends. Thank you for your contribution!
